When Dave Goes Grocery Shopping

Over the course of the last several years, I’ve had a number of people comment of my purchases while standing in the checkout line at the grocery store. This amuses me to no end.

You see, I don’t shop the way many people seem to shop these days.

I don’t shop for ready made dishes one can pop into the oven and ‘cook’, oh no. I shop for ingredients. Yes, ingredients.

Instead of buying macaroni and cheese in a box, I’ll buy elbow macaroni and shredded cheese. I’ll already have butter, flour, and milk to make the white sauce I’ll melt the cheese in.

So what difference does shopping for ingredients make? First, it will give you a lot of flexibility in what you cook. Want to male a variation on the mac & cheese? Mix in some garam masala for an Indian touch. Control the amount of salt in your food by making your own.

Have you ever had frozen meatloaf? If you’ve made mine, you know it’s like 100x better. And there are different ways to make it. You can change the kind of sausage you use, you can use regular, spicy, Italian, whatever.

Let me know what you think.
